Belgium has been a center of international trade for centuries, which contributes to its reputation for being city of diverse culture and new ideas. Belgium has something for everyone: unique museums, historic architecture, 650 styles of beer and more than 2,000 chocolate shops.

Seven Wonders of Belgium
Belgians take pride in their country’s many cultural and economical qualities, which can be experienced firsthand during this year’s World Congress. These wonders will give you a comprehensive look at what life is like in Brussels.

  1. Economy
To create a convenient environment for work and travel, Belgium offers outstanding services in areas such as passenger transport and communications infrastructure. Corporate headquarters thrive in this country. These business establishments are a major source of continual employment and generate significant local demand for specialized business services such as media, law, accounting and consulting.
  2. Gastronomy
Flavorful cuisine and fine beers are an important part of Belgian culture. The country has enjoyed an unmatched reputation for specialty beers since the Middle Ages. One of the most prestigious beers in Brussels is Trappist beer, brewed at only seven breweries in the world, six of which are in Belgium. Belgian chefs are known for their innovative recipes and use of local produce.
  3. Business and Technology
Belgium’s economic makeup is mostly comprised of small- and medium-sized enterprises. These businesses use cutting-edge technology and search for creative, sustainable ways to conduct business. Belgian entrepreneurs are involved in a wide variety of sectors including scientific research, car manufacturing, textiles, oil and civil engineering.
  4. Design
The country also has a longstanding presence in the fashion world. Since the 1980s, a variety of Belgian designers have enjoyed international success. Known for mixing genres, these designers are recognized for their classicism, antiquity, avant-gardism and the ability to push through boundaries to create unique clothing, furniture and accessories.
  5. Continental Hub of Europe
Belgium is an active member of the international community. The capital city, Brussels, is home of the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), making it Europe’s center of international relations. Belgium is also a well-respected member of the UN, showing its commitment by sending Belgian Blue Helmets on a number of peacekeeping missions around the world.
  6. History
Gaining independence in 1830, the territory of Belgium has an interesting history including periods of wealth, poverty, starvation and conflict. The most prosperous time of the medieval period was the beginning of international trade, which brought great wealth and prestige to the area of present-day Belgium. Now a federal state, Belgium still celebrates its rich history preserving some of the architecture and customs from the medieval times.
  7. Culture
Along with Belgium’s rich history comes a vast culture. The centuries-old buildings in Belgian cities catch the visitor’s eye, as traces of the 19th century Art Nouveau style remain present. Belgium is also home to a number of famous artists and painters specializing in a variety of different styles.
